Can't add to the decision between 5 and 6th speed transmissions, but I thought this may help give you some facts on your model and various options. It allows you to select the transmission brand/type and tells you the final drive ratios....

Hey architect... what's "SG"? Super Glide? I see a dresser. And yeah, I've shifted into 6th so often, that if I don't do the 6 speed, I'm gonna ship my FB to Japan and have em put in an indicator lite that shows what gear I'm in, like on my friends Shadow...
I sold the Bonneville last year, and the jerk painted the patina tank...

I put a 6 speed Rev tec gearset in my '00 road king when the 5 speed gave up. I like the ratios better than my '09. It is much easier & cheaper to change gearing if ya want to run 75+ alot. I would have never have changed it if the stock 5 speed didn't **** itself. I'm thinking about lowering the gearing on my '09 so it ain't lugging at 75?

I have an 2002, Purchased a 6 speed SE transmission yesterday, for $1100.00
I have a buddy who needs a 5 speed replaced, so I'm selling the 5 speed for $250, having another buddy install my transmission for $300, so my new transmission will be $1150.00
Is this a good deal? I travel on the highway quite a bit, so the extra gear will help!

This is what I did, I wanted lower rpm's, I cruise a lot on the highway, I did not want to spend big $ for a 6 speed. I found a over drive pulley from Andrews, its the drive pulley for the belt, it has 2 more teeth, it lowerd my rpm's from 3,000 at 70 mph to 2,700, love it, total cost for my indy parts and labor was $350, I did loose a little in first gear but would only be slightly noticeable if I was on a drag strip, my bike is much smoother and more enjoyable to ride on the highway now, I did not have to do any mods, the stock belt still fit as well.

Man this is an old thread, one thing I seen repeated a couple times that is not true is that our DD6 or direct drive six speed is no different in the top gear then the stock 5 speed and this is simply not true. With the DD6 we overdrive the primary with a 28 tooth comp sprocket and a longer chain. This is a more efficient way of getting the rpm drop at cruising speeds. The first 5 gears will be very close to the stock ratios 1-5 and 6th gear will be the equivalent of a .86 to one overdrive.

In the end I decided to buy a "new" bike, an '09 Street Glide w 2700 miles. 2 tone blue w special gold metallic underneath. Not my fav color, I woulda' preferred ruby red, but the price was rite, and the very lo miles, nice chrome bits etc...
I have had my FB for sale all summer, and finally a dealer from The Netherlands is interested at far less than I thot it was worth, but it's worth what it sells for
I thot about the larger gear, but also wanted the radio and fairing... I will miss my old ride
