Cam bearing failure...I think I'm going to be sick!

A week and a half before we are supposed to go on a bike trip for a week, I had a cam bearing fail. I thought I heard a funny noise last week when I rode the bike, but didn't get a chance to check it out until today...

I don't know how much trash is in the engine and I don't know for sure that the case will hold another bearing. The cam of course is trashed and the oil pump is scored. I don't know what else I will find...

That's gotta suck big time!

Damn - how many miles?

You will find a bunch of trash in the oil pan, DO NOT restart without pulling/cleaning the pan!

Is that on your 02 RG?

Is that a stock bearing?

That didn't get changed with the cam change.

Just asking. Not trying to add to your pain.

Sorry to hear that, hope you're back on the road soon.

All those guys thinking about a cam swap and keeping the stock INA bearings should look again at that picture.

That was my thought exactly...Sorry for your misfortune, hope you're up and running soon!

Sorry for your awful luck. On the bright side, it's way better that being stranded far from home in the middle of your trip. I know that's not much consolation. Please keep us posted as to the outcome.

It's on my 02 RG. The cams were swapped before I got the bike. I've got almost 100K on the bike and the bearings probably have 70K. The rear bearing looks perfect. I found very little trash in the cam chest, but pieces have definitely been through the oil pump.

The oil pressure dropped about 10 lbs from normal on the way to work yesterday. That's why I decided to take a look.

I don't even want to think about pulling the pan again. That was such a pain in the butt last time. I will have to pull the swing arm to get it off. At least I have a table lift now...

Thats sucks. I feel your pain. If its any consolation at least its a high mileage motor. You got alot of use out if it.
