Engine Teardown
Good mornin'; Guys.
Still more bad news with my money gulping motorcycle. It now appears that I'm going to have to do a significant motor tear down to find a "RPM" whine. It sounds like there's a "clicking" noise coming from the bottom end when the crank is turned with a ratchet. What's further complicating the diagnosis; is that I can't turn the crank in the opposite direction with plugs out and transmission disconnected. Very strange...... My question for all you experienced wrenchers is: "Should I change my oil pump at the same time?" I have 47K miles on my bike. I recall when we use to tear down the older cars changing the oil pump was always a given. Your thoughts....... Ride In Peace |
No info on what you have?

It might cost a little more money, but I believe HD use to and may still have an engine exchange program. This might save you some down time and you would have a brand new engine. It might be possible that the engine you have has some manufacturing defect that will show up again later. Just a thought and I am not sure the program still exists.

Pull your cam cover and check your tensioners. There's a chance that one of your tensioners is shot to hell. Mine were shot at 43k. If that's the case, definitely throw a new style oil pump in it, and upgrade to the newer cam plate and tensioners.

So how does it run?
If I was tearing down a bike engine with 47k miles on it I'd replace the oil pump and lots of other stuff probably do some upgrades while I was in there. |
