I posted this in the tech forum but got no response. My engine has been acting a little strange and I could use some help figuring it out. I have a 98 ultra classic fuel injected. It has screamin eagle pipes everything else is stock. Approx. 31,000 miles. The best way I can describe what it is doing is occasionally while riding the engine will "cough". It's like it will be running and for like one second it will act like maybe it miss fires or something. It dont do it often maybe once or twice on a day trip. I'm going on a week long trip at the end of the month and just want to make sure I don't have a problem lurking. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Sounds like a gas thing. Run half a can of b-12 chem tool thru a full tank of prem.gas, then let us know what happens on the tank after that one. How dirty is your air filter ? check your plugs ?
Check plug colour. If they are white your too lean. If they are a nice tan colour, your running good. Sooty is too rich. I think you might be a lil lean!

I am not a mechanic, but it can be caused by many, many, many things.
it always pays to check the dumb stuff first, like condition and gapping of the plugs, and if you've still got the stock plug wires on it, it may be that they've broken down. they're 12 years old by now if they're still stock. you could also have a bit of a blockage in your fuel filter or the screen which i think they were still using back then in the petcock. the petcocks could cause issues back around that time, and may be catching up with you. take some time and clean and adjust what you can. you'd be surprised with how many problems can be fixed by checking the stupid stuff first. also what condition is your air filter element in?
i had the same exact thing and it turned out the bike is lean cuz i installed a se a/c and slip ons with no fuel tuner. so i bought a race tuner and problem solved.
My 04 Ultra has done the same thing from day 1. Maybe once a day, just a slight cough. I have assumed it was just a tiny bit lean and haven't worried about it. The plugs look fine (not white - just slightly tan). My wife's carbed 06 sportster did the same thing only it did it all the time. Soon as it got hot, could hardly keep it running. Turned out it was a bad crank position sensor.
