Default Do I need an overlay harness? 2008 FLHX

Hi guys,

I've got an '08 Streetglide and I'm putting on a solo tour pak for the run to Sturgis. The tour pak is off an 08 Ultra with speakers and I'd like the speakers to work for the ride. I am confused about the function of the non-ultra overlay harness and whether it is needed on the 2008 to make the rear speakers play.

I know it's required if you want to upgrade to the CB / Intercom / XM but is it needed to run the rear speakers?

Thanks in Advance,

Michael

Yes and you'll also need the radio flashed from the dealer

As Dawg said, yes you'll need the non-Ultra overlay harness. You will also need the rear speaker harness, p/n 77157-06. This is the link for installing HD's rear speaker/pods from the P&A catalog on HD's website:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...ts/-J03653.pdf

Your speakers/pods are already on the tour pak, but you'll need the rear speaker harness to run from the speakers to the front of the bike and connect to the non-Ultra overlay harness.

There's a picture of the non-Ultra overlay harness, p/n 70169-06, from HD's website:

Good luck with your installation.

Carl

PS: If your radio controls (volume, bass, treble, etc.) don't include "fader," you'll need the dealer to flash the ECM to turn "on" the fader control.

Thanks Guys,

I knew about the stealer flashing the radio so I'm going to negoitate it into the $195 "service" (oil change) I think I can get them to throw it in.

The best price I've found on the non ultra overlay harness and speaker harness is $200 ($118 + $82) from the big stealer in Festus Mo.

Thanks Guys,

Just an update, it took almost 3 weeks to get the $200 in assorted bits from the big stealer in Mo. I placed the order and waited a week figuring the parts would arrive any day. At the end of that week I got an email telling me there was a delay and I should expect my parts on August 14 or so... I told them to keep the parts and cancel my order the ride to Sturgis was happening with or without rear lights and speakers.

Strangely enough I got an almost immediate reply that all the parts would be sent in the next 4 days. All the parts are here and I will wire it up this week.

Default It lives...

Got my overlay harness installed last week while the misses was out of town last week and it was pretty simple stuff. Really more a pain in the a$$ the moco didn't run the stinking wires.

I'd call it a 2.5 out of 10 on the difficulty scale, the headlight doesn't need to come off the FLHX despite what the book says. The batwing fairing comes off with seven bolts. Use the windshield bolts to ho;d the fairing up while you are working on the assembly...

The tank can be lifted to install the speaker wires so as to not brake the fuel line, I had a helper simply route the harness while I held the half filled tank in the main wiring raceway.

Beyond that there was a deutch connector that came with the quick commector for the tour pak wiring harness, $11.50.

My stealer fashed my stereo for free and "only" charged me $135 for the 2.5K :service" (oil change) so I'm ready for the Black Hills Ralley on time and under budget. See you there!
