OP, Suprised you are not in a brace post surgery to keep you from bending or twisting to damage your fusions. My wife is facing the same surgery and will be in a brace for 6 months. Best of luck to you.
Hell he could be in traction by now or even in a wheel chair. This was posted in 2010 and a lot has changed between then and now.
