2007 RK rear wheel won't stay tight
Hey need some help, returning from a road trip yesterday and my rear tire started to woble at low speeds then lost my rear break, when i checked the bike out the belt was loose and the axle had rotated forward. reset the axle and tightened everything back up. went down the road all was good for about 3 miles then started it all over again

Two things come to mind.
The torque spec for that axle nut is +/- 100 Ft/Lbs. Are you getting it as tight as it should be? Did anti-seize compound - which is necessary on the axle - get on the threads? Harris Denver, CO www.youtube.com/conedown |
Tightening to spec and anti seize are important. Also make sure that the belt is aligned and seated on both pulleys properly. Tighten the belt then turn the wheel a few times and check it again. Make sure the pulley is tight on the wheel, the bolts have been know to loosen/break.
With the cams on the axle pressing against the tabs on the swing arm the only way it could move is if the axle rotates. Make sure there are no metal burrs or dirt on any of the mating surfaces of the bolt head, washers, spacers, swing arm etc. Everything must seat properly. If the axle isn't rotating (the cams are in place) and the belt is seated properly on both pulleys. If the belt loosens up then something else is moving. |
Just out of curiousity......which side is your axle nut and C clip on? Its normally on the left side.

Did you have an IDS pulley put on your bike after you bought it? If you did, that may be the problem. Same thing happened to me with my 2007 Ultra. I bought the H-D IDS for my bike about a year after they came stock in 2008. Seems that when I had a rear tire put on they left a spacer off that came with the IDS. As a result, over time the back wheel kept getting loose and it screwed up the axle threads so the rear axle nut could never be tightened.

My bad.....i meant right side. Axle goes in from the left. Dont mind me.

I take the wrench that came with the bike and it the shit out of it with a mallet until it don't move nomore then the sumbitch is torqued...it don't move anymore ... i had the same problem...Fixed irt like that on the Blue ridge parkway and done it ever since...I never have to adjust it between tire changes no mo.
