Ignore all the attitudes, and smart snots, I have a 1991 FLT And had not rode it in years And I AM MECHANICLY INCLINED and it had also slipped my mind if it was a 12 or a 6 volt ,I dont live and breath the dang thing, there are many reasons one might forget or not knoe, but obviously not very many here have experienced a issue with memory, or ŕ issue remembering **** at the time, or for what the resons might be, heck they all must sharp whip genesis!!
but with all do respect, it is a 12 volt system, I might not know everything about a bike but I do know how not to be a *** or a wannabe Clown!!
The automobile industry and some motorcycles companies started changing there system from 6 volt to 12 in early 1960 and Harley started changing there 6 volt systems over to 12 in 1964 with there Serv-cars ( three wheeled motorcycles that were used for meter maids back in the day and other uses) then in 1965 moved this switch over to there Electra Glude model bikes, as the changes allowed for many benefits to the electrical system in performance and operational features!
I hope this helps you out Pal, and you get everything up and going the way you like!
And thats the way a question should be answered!!!!!
no matter how smart whittled you feel about it!!!
cheers !

A lot of us may have memory issues, but we know enough math to figure out that it's a 7 year old post.
I suppose anyone that is curious is not dumb. It is also likely true that some people remain dumb their entire lives because they are not curious enough or brave enough to ask a dumb question.
Find a new guy, all cars, trucks & motorcycles are 12V now. BUT, I do have a 48V golf cart, but guess what, all the electronics are 12 V Dang it. Except the batteries, they are all 8V. Go figure....
Here`s your answer: Club Car commissioned Trojan Battery Company to make the 8v batteries specifically for then new 48v DS model electric golf cars. The higher voltage over the 36v systems allowed for a faster spinning motor that offered better hill climbing ability and greater throttle response. But each 6v battery weighs 62 lbs, so two more would have somewhat diminished the efficiency of the vehicle. So, By switching to 8v Club car avoided the addition 162 lbs, while still increasing performance. Also, despite having the same number of cells as a battery pack consisting of 8 6v batteries, the 6 8v system cost much less due to needing fewer components and assembly steps.

There has been several configurations of the 48V Club Car. There was the 6V X 8 batteries, then there was the 12V X 4 batteries and the current, 8V X 6 batteries. I owned the earlier 12V X 4 batteries and sold it. It was a good cart but I upgraded to a newer cart with the 8V X 6 batteries.

Or as I see it, some people are just straight up "Mentally Lazy" and would rather ask you for the answer instead of putting forth the effort to investigate the answer themselves, no matter how dumb it makes them look. There is an ENTIRE world of information at the tips of our fingers, literally, as we put them to our keyboards............ just google that ****! It would have actually taken less keystrokes for the OP to google the 6v/12v question than it did to post his question here. I have a hard time being sympathetic towards mentally lazy people. Mentally challenged folks? I'll help them all day, that's not their fault. Too lazy to help yourself? You're on your own...........
As we say in Alabama, "Just do the math".
A few years ago our Governor decided there were too many people in the crazy house. His staff came up with a quiz to expose the intelligent ones from the crazy ones.
Three individuals were selected for evaluation.
The first one was asked "What equals two times two? His answer - "144". He was sent back to lock up.
The second was asked "What equals two times two?" His answer "Tuesday". He also was returned to lock up.
The third one was asked "What equals two times two?" He answered "Four, of course". The staff told Him "Congratulations, you are now free to go, but first tell us how you arrived at your answer". He answered "I just did the math, I subtracted Tuesday from 144".
