Default 2009 Road King Console Trim

I asked about this parts a few weeks ago and really didn't get a good answer so I ask my HD to get one in so I could see it. PN.71973-08

They got it in and it was exactly what I was looking for.

As many of you know the Road King has a brushed aluminum insert in the gas tank console. I have never like it. There is no other brush aluminum on the bike and it always looked out of place to me.

The insert panel is black epoxy on top of a aluminum panel. It looks well made, but I can see were it would be easily bent prior to installation.

The biggest part of the job is removing the old panel. You will destroy it getting it off. But, thats not the hard part, removing the old 3-M tape will take about an hour and then you have to clean the glue off that remains. It is chrome underneath. Harley probably put this on to keep you from getting blinded by the chrome underneath.

The new panel is pretty much a peel and stick operation. But you do need to center it so it fits around the switch and the display. I used some blue painters tape and put alignment markes on it to help center it up. Then peel, align and stick.

I think it looks good and gives the gas tank more detail.

What do you think.

I like it, looks really sharp on your bike. I have a very tiny ding in my original panel from my keys. It irritates me to no end, my eyes are gravitated to it. I also had a hunch it was going to be a huge pain in the **** to replace it, and you've confirmed it.

Welcome to the Forums-

just a guess on my part, but both your model and his use the 6 gallon tank.

many of us use the online partsfinder to figure out "what fits what"...for instance if the 2 consoles for his 09 and your bike are the same, then you'll know.

I wish I would have known about that. My aluminum dash got scratched by a strong wind, I swear. I happen to find a CVO dash and sold mine to a guy that had the insert powder coated and pin striped. Looked awsome. I dont' know why MOCO builds bikes with that cheap piece of crap. Probably so you will spend money on what should be stock. ya think?

I know, mine's a piece of cheap stamped steel and at 64 years old, you think it would look better than this:

OK I'm confused... is 71973-08 plastic or metal?

Can it be painted?
