2011 Street Glide: How to Listen to HD Radio Through Headphones?
I want to be able to listen to the stock HD radio on my 2011 Street Glide through headphones. What are my options?
Thanks |
I don't know. Let's just see.
|
Do the Ultras have this ability?
Thanks |
The Ultras come with a headset and you plug it in to the tank console. It's a hardwire system, not Bluetooth.

This headset, is it a 9 pin connector? Thanks |
No it is a 7 pin connector. To get the function you will need to purchase and install a Communications kit from HD. Make sure to think about whether you will want to add a CB on later. There are two kits and one ONLY does the Music/Intercom, and the other kits has provision for the CB as well. If you decide to add the CB later and had already installed the Music kit you will have to buy the other kit, leaving you with BOTH of the kits. Read on HD's site:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US I'm not concerned with CB function, or even rider to passenger communication. My Street Glide is going to get the HD XM module and Ipod interface. Ultimately, I would just like my passenger and myself to be able to listen to the HD radio through headphones (with separate volume controls). Can this be done? Thanks |
Iron Cross audio repairs the HK radios as well as adds a external headset jack and you could then use a bluetooth headset up for both you and the passenger or a hardwired setup. I have been thinking about this setup or maybe the HD set up but the Iron cross set up intriges me. Maybe someone whom has experience with the Iron cross setup can speak on this option. I have not had time to contact Iron cross to inquire. Good Luck :D

You can send your radio into iron cross. I think they can install a headphone out jack on it. You could then use a y splitter to have two 1/8 jacks out and use an inline volume control to adjust independent volume for you and a passenger.

I have considered just adding a speaker switch that cuts out the fairing speakers and transfers the signal to an outlet for the ear buds. My concern is will the signal to the 2 ohm fairing speakers blow out the ear bud speakers?
|
Wouldn't a hardwired set up be preferable to a Bluetooth rig?
Again, aren't you limited to what types of ear buds you can use when going Bluetooth? Thanks |

You can buy a plug on eBay that converts the 7 pin to a 1/8" outlet.

Yes, that's what I use on my Ultra so I only have to use ear buds. Won't work on a Street Glide tho without a kit of some sort or an Iron Cross mod.
What needs to be done on a Street Glide to make this work? Thanks |

see post #8. You pull your radio, send it in for a mod and have a headphone jack installed to plug in your ear buds

What is the little plug already in front of the HK radio (lower right corner)?

I bought an adapter for the 7 pin that allows me to plug regular earbuds in.

AUx input for your Ipod or other MP3 player.
Also have them change the color of the LED to amber, like the gauges. |
The simpliest way I have found is (this is simplar than I am making it sound)
Basicly I tied into where the speaker wires plug into the speakers I wanted everything to plug in and unplug so: I made a Y connector (two female and one male ends) with extra wire speaker wire and some spade connectors. Using the Y connector: Plug the stock speaker wire into the male end, then one female end into the fairing speaker and the other end into a speaker wire that I had gotten from radio shack (that was speaker wire that had a male RCA jack end - that's all they had) you will need to add a spade connector to one end. (or just soder the headphone wires to the stock wires) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA150_.jpg I had a double RCA female coupler http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/pub..._2VtR5t6rJiXtw This plugs into an iPod 3.5 adapter, like a Pyle (PLIPG1) iPod 3.5mm Stereo to RCA Adaptor The white wire in the picture is unused http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/pub...Rl_N5ECdtnPmuQ I did not want to drill a hole anywhere and this one sticks on with body moulding tape. When you order one make sure it's black, a lot of them are white. Once you get settled on what and where you want it and want to drill a hole, this is a black water proof one: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-g0FhPwM...-IC-3-5PM.html http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchf...3iC35PM-fp.jpg I originaly mounted it on the fairing but the headphone wire kind of dances around in the wind, so the second time I ran some wires under the gas tank and ran the wires back to the battery area and mounted the iPod headphone jack to my heat shield. Now I don't see the wire dancing above the gas tank. I guess I need to take some real pictures and do a write up. lol With this setup I use some Skull Daddy ear Buds and I can hear perfectly. Even soft pop/rock. I have the AVC on 2 bars and never get above the third bar on the volume. Way better than any speaker/amp setup and I've been the 6 1/2" speakers and 360 watt setup route. I still couldn't hear it clear enough at 70 into a head wind with the big amp and big speakers. This should all cost less than $30 |
Texas Fat Boy,
Did you do that mode to just one side of your speakers (mono) or did you use both sides (stereo)?? Are the fairing speakers still on while you listen to your headphones? Thanks for the help. |
I think you may be on to something here. Got any pics of this?

The stock fairing speakers stay on, but the volume is so low you can't hear them. So if you want to just tool around without messing with the headphones, just turn up the volume and the stock speakers play like normal. |

Just Got mine back from Iron Cross yesterday and I’m VERY pleased with the results. Both the auxiliary and headphone exit the rear of the radio. The headphone cable is 60” long, enough to run to the rear of the tank. There is also a switch included to toggle between your speakers and the headphones.
Thanks |

Very Simple solution
After pondering the Street Glide/ear bud situation I found a very simple solution. I bought a 6 foot long mini-plug extension at Fry's for $3.99. I then cut off the male plug, stripped the insulation back a couple of inches revealing a red wire and a white wire and a ground shield wire. I gathered the ground wire by twisting it together. I soldered a couple of feet of small diameter wire to the white wire. Then I removed the hot wire from the right speaker (does not matter which side) and put the red wire through the small hole in the spade connection and slid the connector back on the speaker spade. I did the same for the ground wire. Then I ran the added wire over to the left speaker and inserted it in the spade under the hot wire for the speaker. Then I ran the mini extension wire through a couple of wiring keepers and back under the top of the gas tank bib coming out just ahead of the seat. Neat, easy, cheap, non-invasive and it works.

your a frickn genius. i was a radio shack yesterday trying to figure it out . walk out po'ed
on my way to best buys |
I did Texas Fat Boy's mod. Works like a charm and it's in my price range.
|
+1 on the Texas Fat Boy mod with one change. I would add an interrupter/cutoff switch at the speaker wire connection so the speakers cut off when the ear phones are connected
|
I did mine very similar to Texas Fat Boy except I used the aux switch to turn the headphone jack on and off. I was getting terrible feedback when the volume was up without headphones plugged in. Sounded awful with the volume up...I've got Boom speakers so that may have played a roll.
4 relays and a few feet of wire solved it. |
Deleted for stupidity - mine, specifically. Others have given the correct info.
|
There is a company called Plug Up, the make a 7 pin adapter that will take a mini plug from the headphones. Plug into the adapter & the adapter into the consloe plug, voila, music.
|
Not much help, but I'm thinking of adding mini headphone jack for some ear buds to my set up. I have a Kenwood head unit using the RCA outputs to the amp, so the speaker wires out of the head unit are unused. Was thinking of putting a resistor on the head speaker wires to lower the output to mini jack? Also putting a switch on the amp switch wire to turn the amp/speakers off? Would be interested if anyone had a good guess on the resistors needed? If this is even worth it?
