Im getting this strange pop back through the air cleaner occasionally when I start my bike. Its when the bike is cold, I thumb the button and it sounds like it catches and then pops through the intake. I thumb it again and it starts fine. I also get the same thing if im cruising at a low speed in traffic, motor running barely off idle, I roll on a little and it will cough and pop through the intake. This pop doesnt happen all the time just now and then. Its a injected bike with slip ons DFO and stage one intake. Any ideas??
I've got the same thing but it only occured twice on cold start in which I didn't let the engine crank enough times to get it to actually start like you mentioned. It is just pressure releasing through the air intake as this is the path of least resistance when the cylinders are locked in place.
We had an interesting traveler in yesterday - it was an '05 Ultra with very poor throttle response, coughing, stalling, etc (18 K on the odometer). Sounded like too lean, but, our foreman checked the fuel pressure (injected) and it was wayyy low - 28 psi and it's supposed to be 55-60 psi. Factory uses a rubber fuel line from the fiting at the bottom of the tank to the pump inside the tank. The tubing is long enough that it can "flop" around enough to wear a small hole in it, thus cause a leak inside the tank. To verify, we opened the tank and you could hear the fuel hitting the inside of the tank and the pump ran continuously trying to build up pressure. Perhaps anyone with greater than 15K on their touring bike (FL models) should think about having their fuel pressure checked if they are experiencing similar symptoms.
I get that at times starting.A small cough through the intake.Started after installing Stage one air cleaner ,pipes and fuel pack.I believe mine is a rich condition and the cyl is clearing itself of excess fuel.
