Anyone powering their GPS from the cig lighter?

would a rubber plug like one from a car or trucks power point work instead of the lighter to keep the point clean and dry when not in use?

I am using a USB adapter also.
Here is a link to one, which is also available at Wal Mart.

Notice in the second picture below, there is no interference with the tank when turning full lock right to full lock left.

Great idea as with a normal sig. light you need to make sure the plugged in piece doesn't hit the tank when you turn the bars.

The confusion here is that not all outlets are for cigarette lighter ... often it's just an accessory power supply outlet. I believe if you were to plug a cigarette lighter device into an accessory outlet the heat and high current drain would either blow the fuse or melt the assembly.
I believe the real issue is the dangers of cords hanging in that area and the fact that it may interfere with turning, or get tangled up and effect turning.
They should have it marked with the power (amperage) limitation to prevent use of heavy current draw items. If you use a tire infiltrator I'd suggest adding a more rugged outlet and be certain it's wired with the correct gauge of wire for that current load.
My GPS has to use the supplied power cord, it provides the proper current to operate it. I hot wired an accessory outlet and have it in my glove box. I attempted to use many USB adapters, even located ones that supply 1 amp X 2 outlets and all of them would overheat and shut down after hours on the road. Only the original power cord runs my GPS for as long as I want it on. The shutdowns while on the road was driving me nuts.
I'm adding another accessory plug so I can run USB powered devices to charge my phone and other USB powered devices like cameras.
My question to all of you is "Did your outlet connection have a cigarette lighter in it for lighting cigarettes?
