This rattle WAS normal...
Was at the dealer listening to a guy really give the service writer a piece of his mind over the rattling of his 2011 Ultra. Apparently he had paid "lots of money for the bike and it was still under warranty" and wanted the bike checked right away.
So a tech came out to the service lane, thru his leg over the bike and started it up. Sure enough, we could all hear the rattle. The tech said..."OK, I'll put it on a lift and check it out..." As he was about to drop it in gear, I motioned to the tech to look at the front heat shield...it was just vibrating in place.
The tech returned with a socket and drive and within 20 seconds secured all the heat shields. Problem solved.
Seems the owner and his buddy swapped out the cat header for a cat-less one the day before...wonder if there was any connection???
The tech and service writer just shook their heads as the rider drove away. Slowly I begin to understand the friction between some owners and service departments...

On my previous bike, I was close to taking it in for a rattle/pinging sound as well... drove me nuts and I was getting concerned as it was happening during certain rpms.
I thought I had checked everything before I thought about taking it in - license plate frame, mufflers, engine guards, footpegs... then I decided to give it one more thorough look-over before taking her in.... found one of the bolts holding the right footpeg clamp on the engine guard was loose. The footpeg itself was cool and in place, and there was a second bolt keeping the clamp in place, but it was just that one little bolt that had gotten loose and causing all kinds of nerve-racking racket... put some blue loctite, tightened her up and all was quiet once again. I would've looked pretty foolish also, but I certainly wouldn't have made a big fuss about it, as I would've been very open to the idea that it could be something very simple.
