What does the compensator do?

Basically it's a shock absorber. Takes out the torque pulses in the drive train.

which saves your drive train bearing from shock and failure !
allows a few degrees of slip when torque is slammed around - from normal riding and abuse ...

Yep! Your question has already been answered.
To say the same thing in a different set of words, here's what I was going to say...
The compensator is there to absorb and minimize some of the shock loads within the drive train.

as for what causes them to go bad,most agree thier bad out of the box.weak springs.

For most people the stock one is fine. From 07 and up is where the weak springs don't work as well with the 96 and bigger.

So why don't all the bikes have the spring pack?? I just looked at the parts manual for my 08 FXSTC and it doesn't have all that.

all H-D Big Twin models ( within the past 30 years) have the compensating sprocket.
