Default 2001 flhtcui swingarm upgrade - questions

I have read through the various postings regarding upgrading the Swingarm on my 2001 to a 2002 - 2006 Swingarm.

I believe there is no way to keep my rear wheel assembly / brake caliper, etc. and just replace the swingarm?

Before I go shopping for parts I would like to confirm that my shopping list is complete?

2002 - 2006 Touring Parts

1. Swingarm
2. Belt Guard
3. Rear Wheel with 1" Axle, bearings, spacers, pulley, brake rotor
4. Rear Brake Caliper and Mount
5. Swingarm Isolator Mount Busings (my bike has 37k miles so I expect these will need replacing
6. CCE Swingarm Retrofit Kit
7. Do I need a new belt or will my existing belt fit?
8. No change in brake fluid keeping between the 2002 - 2006 years as they use DOT 5?
9. Am I missing anything?

Thanks!

just swap the bearings and axle stuff ( no need for a different wheel) you will need the axle sleeve which goes inside the hub(between the wheel bearings)...should also be able to have your brake mount drilled for the larger axle

Being the FNG to all of this I have to ask what are the advantages to upgrading the swing arm? Do the 2001 axle/swingarm have a history of problems?

nickel dime,

I am new to this as well. With that said, I did research the areas of the bike where many people have experienced premature component wear / failure.

Not to digress, my first upgrade was to install the Screamin Eagle Hydraulic Cam Tensioner Assembly. My local Harley dealer also echoed that as being the best upgrade I could make to my bike.

Now on to the Swingarm. I have read on several Forums that the swingarm has been know to crack where the axle attaches. Also, there is some inherent instability in the design that was addressed in the 2002 and newer swingarm assemblies. I have read of several individual and or combined upgrades to address this. My plan is to start with upgrading the swingarm assembly for which I have put together a list of components based on my reading through the Forum. I want to get some validation for my list from others who have gone before me.

imrotton2,

Can you expand on the replacement of the bearings, axle, etc? Everything I read lead me to believe I needed to replace the wheel, bearings, etc?

If I can just replace the swingarm that would be much easier and of course more cost effective!

Thanks!

Your best bet is to try to find the parts from someone that's done a trike conversion, that's what I did. You may be able to switch your 3/4" bearings in your rear wheel to 1" bearings, you may have to drill out the middle of the hub so the inner spacer will fit. Don't try to drill out your caliper, you''l never get it perfectly straight unless you take it to a machinist, if it's off just a little your pads will wear unevenly. I can't remember if the belt guard is different or not, belt is the same. Good luck, it is a good upgrade, it was much easier when there were people doing trikes since you could buy almost everything you needed at a fairly reasonable price.

DTTJGlide,

Yes, I have located a complete set of parts but it's still a bit pricy! I am working with the seller to see what kind a deal we can make to lower the cost a bit.

Any other advice is greatly appreciated!

Default Swingarm Upgrade

Did the upgrade to a 07 swingarm off a street glide to my 99 FLHRC-I. The older SW has Cleve blocks they call bearings. The newer SW have spherical bearings and the CCE kit adapted the smaller 5/8" SW shaft from the older bike. The bore thru the tranny is 5/8" and some people have bored out the tranny case to 3/4" which is the standard size for 02-07, the $300.00 for the kit made sense to me. Really upgrades the rear suspension but still not wobble free, IMHO. The caliper could be bored out but not that expensive to get one of Ebay. I went with a 9 spoke rear wheel as I wanted to get away from the laced wheel and picked up used axle and rotor off forums as well. Belt is 10 yrs old but other issue is width. Older belt is 1 1/2" I believe so if you keep old belt you'll need to bore out your old pulley as its the right width. If you replace belt go with 02-06 pulley as you'll need a narrower belt which will also help with slightly wider rear tire. I'm running 140 on rear as before but there is a ton more room and I would bet I could get a 150 on easy. MY friend and real wrench did it in 4 hrs with me watching and lightly helping. Also switched out the tranny pulley from 32 tooth to 33 as my early injected model has the 3.37 gearing. I'm in Montana and we can get rolling out this way so I was looking to bring down rpm while cruising. I will admit I do more downshifting now than before. Gearing comes out around 3.26 now. Speedometer reads slightly slow now (reads 40 doing 41-42) and odometer runs slow.
I'm sure I have left something out but is a great upgrade ........goldie

Goldie,

Thank you for the advice! It was not clear to me from reading through the Forum if I could just go with the new rear wheel pulley and leave the current belt? So, if I go with the new rear wheel pulley I will need the front pulley as well which I will need to add to my shopping list.

Thanks again!

Forgot to ask.

So the belt on a 2001 is 1 1/2" width and a belt 2002 and newer are 1 1/4"?
Other than the width are the number of sprockets the same or did they change?

Thanks!
