Harley battery terminal question
 

Now this might seem to be an odd question but from reading all the battery aftermarket-connection questions I thought it worth a try.

2006 Ultra
I have a HD battery. And, in addition to the obvious Pos/Neg horizontal cable bolt threds, there are also vertical threads on top of each terminal that take 1/4" bolts, coarse thread--which is terrific since the horizontal bolts on the 2006 Ultra are way hard to get in and out doing a battery disconnect on my own. So I welded two washers onto 1/4" bolts, screwed them into the top, attached a short rubber tarp tie-down to the washer holes and lifted with my left hand while working the wrench with my right hand.

Additionally, the vertical threads are terrific for attaching the battery tender cable and perhaps many other kinds of connections such as heated hear (that I do not have).

So, at the end of a long spiel---do your batteries have these vertical threads on top of each terminal? Sounds as if many people do not have these and they are terrific for reasons mentioned above.

Questions:
Do other brands of batteries have this feature? Do current HD batteries have this feature?

My '03 does not have the features you refer to.

I think from about 08 and newer have that. My 07 does not with a 10-06 date.

Where the threads are on a battery post depends on who made the battery. That said; if you ever saw: How a battery is constructed inside, How little is actually sealing the terminals to the plastic case and How little is actually attaching a terminal to the first (and last) plate in the battery . . . you would never, ever pick a battery up by the terminals. Sorta like picking a rabbit up by its ears . . . not real comfortable for the rabbit. Just because you don't get a flat tire from rolling over broken glass every time it happens; doesn't mean you shouldn't try and avoid doing so when possible.

For that hard to get at battery problem cut a strip of old inner tube & make a sling for the battery. You can lower the battery into place with it, leave it around the battery, (it'll add a little cushioning) & lift the battery out with it when you need to service it. No strain on the battery terminals.
