the tip over switch bracket on those was prone to cracking.
test by starting bike in drive way and tipping it from side to side.
( it's like the "tilt" in a pinball machine)
the ignition switch contacts on those were also prone to burn up, esp. if extra lighting was used up front, the switch contacts couldn't take the extra current draw---some were subject to recall which you could check with the VIN- my '95 had the switch replaced under recall 10 years later...
also check that the + battery cable is not grounding out on bumps, happened on one of mine, just a little rub through the insulation...fixed it with a piece of split fuel line hose over the cable until I got home
