Looking at a 02 Road King Standard, Maroon, 11,000 miles, Python pipes, light scratches, clear title. Is there anything I should be looking for on this model? What size motor? Carb or fuel injected? Is this a good year? Thanks for the replys, and I checked some in the search forum, but didn't quite get the answers I was looking for.
Engine stock is 88", but many were upgraded later to a 95". Fuel injection is preferable, although if you like doing your own tuning then the carb makes it easier. Apparently '02 was the last year for the "good" crank bearings and flywheels so that is a good thing. If the bike has been maintained properly then it should be a good bike. If you have a Carfax account then run the vin to see if it was serviced regularly at a dealer. Although if the owner did the work himself or had an independent do it, Carfax may not show that. Also, look at the tires, if a lot of wear on the rear tire or cords showing then either he likes to do burnouts (bad) or just doesn't pay attention to maintenance (also bad). Additionally, the cam chain tensioners are a weak spot on '06 and earlier bikes, but with 11,000 miles you should have some life left on them.
02 had several updates over prior years, including features that were superior to later years. I recall (not sure about this one) the rear swing-arm was improved over 2001 and earlier; the 02's had the left-side Timken bearing and forged crank (much stronger bottom-end than even the current bikes); this was the first year of Delphi fuel-injection (there's a lot who prefer carbs, but I like FI - the Delphi FI means it'll be relatively easy to tune the bike if/when you make engine/exhaust modifications)...
I recently bought a used bike, and the 02's were at the top of my list because of the foregoing. Luck and fate being what they are, I ended up with an 04. With 11K miles, unless the bike was abused, this one seems nearly 'new' to me.
Lots of people think the 02's represent a 'sweet spot' in the evolution of HD baggers.
