Exclamation Rear sprocket came loose

I just saw on Face book a posting from the girl that bought my Deuce. She said the rear sprocket came loose and messed up the custom wheel. She said ...heard a grinding noise when I got pulled over 4 bolts were stripped out and 1 was gone...no warning .

Have any of you heard of this happening ? I don't know if lock tight was on the bolts or not. Should it have had Lock tight?

She is okay and that is great.

Back in 05 when I had a new Super Glide, it happened to me. Stripped off 2 bolts. Good thing I was going slow. Covered under warrant, new sprocket and labot. Lock tite a must.

You're not supposed to reuse those bolts and new ones come with loc-tite on them.

I've seen a few reports on this happening. It usually occurred after the sprocket had been removed/replaced. As previously stated, use new bolts (come with thread locker on them).

My Duece has nearly 80,000 miles on it and I would estimate that the rear sprocket has been R&I'd at least 8 or 10 times. Never replaced the bolts, never used any loctite, never seen a torque wrench, and it's never come loose.

when torqued properly the bolts stretch,so they need to be replace.

I've reused sprocket bolts. Red loctite, torque down to spec, and make an index mark with a sharpie on the bolt head and wheel. Check every few days, and after a couple of weeks, I'll clean the sharpie marks off the wheel.
