Default HD hammock seats compared

Harley redesigned the Hammock seat awhile back. I had the opportunity to compare the old and new. These seats are totally different designs from the base late through the upholstery so I was curious to see exactly what that means.

The pictures show the bottom views first from the back, then the front end. Yellow arrows in the 1st pic point out the frame contact points so you can see how much lower the seat pan sits. Blue arrows show changed dimensions where the passenger gets additional height (1st pic) and the seat is shifted forward (2d pic). Top views of the two are next with the old seat in front first, then the new in front. Finally, the new seat installed on my bike.

The bottom of the baseplate has been lowered (see pics) and the well for the drivers butt moved forward. The result is 1" lower and 1" forward shift in seating. That means a reduction in leg distance (to the pegs or foot controls) of about 1.5" when compared to the old hammock seat.

I have a 31" inseam and actually preferred the old seat both for legroom and for the flatter seat area (more "asscheek" pressure versus "prostate" pressure... so to speak). The passenger seating on the old seat slopes down in front so passenger slides forward continually. That area on the new seat is built up in front considerably and gives a better ride for them (I am told). The old seat is better finished IMHO with double stitches and an overall consistent design (versus the "patch" appearance of the new seat).

My recommendation: inseam 30"+, you'll like the old seat best. All passengers and riders with shorter inseams will prefer the new seat. I have the longer inseam and a wife... so guess what I have now

That's great info, thanks for taking the time to post. I'm strongly considering a Hammock seat in hopes to relive my tailbone pain.

The seats do make a long ride more comfortable... I rode the old one cross country last year (RFTW.org) and will do the same with the new one.

Do watch for the 20% off sales, or online specials though... $500 is just too much

So, which one is better? Do they stay comfy on a long ride of 500+ miles? I have the old style I believe but never have had it on. I might have to give it a try.
