Not trying to thread hijack, But I am have a 97 Electra Glide. Just put new shocks on the back. Have 30Lbs. in them. Just noticed today with the tour pack on and my wife, she is 140ish. I hit a bump and it bottoms out real bad. How much can I saftly put in to stoip this.
I'm pushin about 250...ok maybe 265 and on myRoad King I'm running 25lbs. solo in the rear The wife comes in about 145 and I run about 30 in the rear. I did replace the shocks with the newer ones so I can run more air in them. I usually run about 5lbs in the front. My roads are pretty rough and we don't bottom out on them but I wish I could go a little lighter on good smooth roads.
I run 35#'s all for both 1 and 2 up. Every once in a while we bottom out on 2 up and I think I need to increase to 40# but never have because we have only bottom'd out like 2 or 3 times.
I have a 2012 ultra glide and the air shocks suck no-matter what psi i tried 1 up or 2 up they rode like **** and would bottom out so dealer credited me 180.00 towards cvo shocks there so much better in every way
What has been most comfortable for us has never even been close the the manual recommendations.
When checking different PSI even 2-3 lbs can make a significant difference in the ride.
The other, counter-intuitive, factor is that more PSI can produce a softer (cushier) ride than less PSI.
ie. at 16 psi we are not bottoming out, but when we bump it up to 19 psi it is actually a softer ride than at 16.
I found that to be true also. Ive got mine at around #25 solo....I have a 1" lowering kit on the back and its needed a heavier weight to minimize a kidney punch ride.
I had the same question and to all those who gave their answers,..thank you. to all those who said to "check your manual" I think most people would if they had a manual to check. sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious!
