Harley doesn't recommend using the cigarette lighter for anything but the lighter for reasons I won't get into. (I use mine all the time for low power draw gadgets). I don't know if its coincidence or planning that they occasionally wire up the Lighter Socket back wards. The lighter will still work but nothing else will and you could actually damage one of your gadgets that are pole sensitive. I wouldn't hesitate using the lighter socket for gadgets such as iPods, phones, and gps's but I would suggest before doing so you check and make sure the centre terminal is positive and the outer socket is negative.

i know this is an old thread, but i have to say... this is why i love this forum!

i guess on my way back from our weekend road trip last weekend, the cheapo phone charger i bought came apart (literally, when i pulled it out this morning it was in pieces). the little metal ring apparently made contact with the power and ground as i pulled it out. went to plug in the mp3 to charge, no go... checked the fuses, good, ACC switch light was off as well... WTH... ok, fuses were good, why is it not working.... GOOGLE search... BAM.... pulled the P&A fuse, blown.

everything back up and working. i was thinking.... i'm gonna feel like an a$$ if i drive to the dealer for this and they replace a fuse..... no mention of the lighter being tied into the P&A fuse in the book! thanks again HDFORUM!!

Yes, it is the PA fuse. Thanks to Old V Twin and this forum I am sure I saved a trip to the dealer and money.

I love Google and this forum. I know this thread was started two years ago but it is the gift that keeps on giving. I found it by doing a search since I had the same problem and figured out from this old Q and A how to fix it! Thanks v_twin!
