How is this installed and how does it hold up under tension?

tension?? The advert sez, "for emergency movement of motorcycle off the road or to a safer more realistic environment to deal with getting a replacement for a new one."

So my guess is it wont hold up for to many burn outs, and or wheelies!
Just look for it to get you off the interstate or out of the boonies!
Pretty pricey @ $25.00 but is good insurance. I will have to get me one, as I'm running on a six plus year old belt w 40+K

Looks like the same kit except that the kit from drivebelt911 is cheaper & shows install video.. have two on order... just in case!

 

Does anyone know how the drive belt usually breaks?
Is the break a straight line between bumps or is it across more than one bumps?

 

looks like trouble to me!

 

if it goes, it depends how it was damaged- the prime danger is a rock getting up between the belt and pulley.

if the belt is holed in the middle, it'll last awhile, if on the edge, it may tear.

belts do not break often- I had the belt on my hi-po FXR go in 1990 at 60,000 miles- 40,000 of which were which the CHP, and 20,000 of which were me, hot rodding, wheelies, some burn outs and other abuse.

If it goes, it is a big job incl pulling inner/outer primary and clutch and removing the swing arm. Big tools are needed.

but the chances of a belt going are slim.

the evo bagger turned over 80K and the belt is great, many, many belts go over 100 k miles.


even tension adjustment is not super-crucial

just watch for holes and fraying from mis-aligned pulleys


as for the repair clips, I'd like to see the other side- can the steel clip damage the pulley ?


most riders have a hog member ship- get the $20 upgrade for unlimited towing to the dealer- that's all you need,

'cause with a broken belt that's where you are headed anyway unless you have the tools and know how at home - in which case you'll have a truck and ramp at the other end of some phone call.

When Harley started using drive belts instead of chains (1984 give or take?) they gave emergency belts with new bikes. I can't remember exactly how they connected. They weren't a continuous round belt though. After a year of two the belts proved reliable enough that they quit providing the emergency belts. The belts used today are many times stronger than the belts they used in the eighties. That's why they can get away with much narrower belts today.

 

The article on the guy traveling around the world had alot of info on belts..From what i understand, foreign material causes the belt to over tension, and if the belt is too loose to the point where it can climb on top of the sprocket teeth, it will break as well....

 

I have been stuck 2 times in my life when a chain broke.
Ive never had a belt break.
Last bike went >60K no problems with belt.
I would skip the $25 emergency belt and spend it on a roadside emergency service addition on you insurance policy.
I think my Progressive policy charges $10 extra.
Just think what a danger and pain in the .... it would be to even try to get that thing on, esp at night on an interstate with cars going by at 75-80.
Cell phone and 24/7 roadside emergeny call number. Best way to go.
