Don't have to but should. Any time you change the way air flows in or out of the engine, the volumetric efficiency of the engine changes. The ECM can adapt to a certain extent, but the engine will run cooler, smoother, more powerfully, and more efficiently if the VEs are calibrated correctly.

For the time being I'm running a set of Xieds on my '08,
with a set of Rush Big Louies and a RSD breather.
The Xieds were put on 45k miles ago along with a set
of Rush baloney cut slip ons and a heavy breather....
That set up worked flawlessly, so I put the Xieds on
my new set up......
If I go ahead with a cam upgrade, I'll ditch the Xieds and
install something else.
Seeing as you have a 2012 all could be different, I'm not sure.

I need to know about this as well , I purchased a pair 2011 VnH Ovals during the winter for my 2016 Street Glide Special , I am on my second tank of gas but I noticed something different Other that the sound , and only when its cold , I let idle for 10 minutes or so but my first 1/2 stops or so it seems like I need to throttle more , if not I stall it , the dealer told me I may need to remap do to the fact the pipes were on a 96 ci and now on a 103 , he told me i best figure it out soon , some of the replies I see here does not seem like the case , after those 1/2 dozen stops i have no issue.

I installed a pair of V&H double slash on an other wise bone stock "13 Road Glide Ultra. After a 1,800 mile trip, I checked the plugs and they looked pretty good, no pinging or other abnormal engine running issues, go for it. When you open the intake and exhaust headers then a tuner may be needed.

Ok, my 2018 Street Bob sounds weak at idle and revs. But while in gear, you really can gear the Harley sound. Especially 3rd & 4th when you "romp" on it. It's almost like it has to be in gear to sound good. Wanna put pipes on it so bad, but as we all know, it's never that simple. Between Stage 1's, tuning, fuel packs.. a $400 project can hit $1500 quickly.
