2005 Road King front shifter shaft
On my way in to work this morning, I was getting off the Hwy and downshifting and my shift lever broke free. I thought that the shift bar had broken free. I pulled over and noticed that it was still attached. After some messing around I figured out how to get it in gear. I attached a video that shows the problem since I thought I would never be able to explain it properly. I am interested to hear your thoughts about if you think the shift shaft just needs to be replace or if it is bushings. If it is bushings is it something I can replace with general home tools without having to remove the primary?

Thanks for any and all help!

Thanks BigJimmy. I do believe you are correct. When I push it in it comes out a little from the back side of the linkage arm and then free spins inside. When I pull the shifter shaft out and it goes back inside all the way it catches correctly. I guess I am going to have to pull it apart and figure out if it is that linkage that is stripped or if it is the shifter shaft. I would assume that the linkage is softer than the shifter shaft so I would guess that to be the problem. I just have to see if I can scrounge enough tools to get it done at work.
Thanks!

You just need some allen wrenches to get the linkage lever tight.
I had that problem on my '00 RK while on a long road trip. There is a split clamp with an allen screw to tighten it. On mine, the lever cracked opposite the split. I made some field repairs to get me home, but I had to replace the lever.
