Default Inner Fairing removal

The MoCo wants about $400 plus for the painted to match inner fairing so I'm thinking of doing it my self. How long should it take to get it off the bike?

it really is not all that hard IF you are a brave soul.... I did it and was very happy with it... However, I bought a second fairing and had it painted then did the swap in a day - are you buying a painted inner or having yours painted??? I really did not want alll the slack time between the swaps - by the time I got it back, I would have forgotten where everthing went....

If I were you - buy the service manual first then take your time... have your new inner ready to go and then just do it... Its just R/R = remove and replace... while you are at it... if you have every thought about handle bars - do it then...

Note = my bike is an 04' FLHTCI - I rode that for two years then bought a complet fairing set for a RG and did that swap = now that is an undertaking...

Both have/had painted "inners" I do like the look and it is Sharp = however, I will warn you = the shinny painted inners do show ALL the dust and dirt much more than the "flat" painted inners.. just so you know..

What model is it? The Road Glide fairing installation is different. There are a couple of tips that can make it go smoother.

Regardless of model, I'd mark the Gauges and their associated wires with masking tape and a number or lettering system to eliminate the possibility of confusion.

My mechanical ability is marginal... and I did it! IF it is a dresser fairing, take your time and have a second person if at all possible. pulling the fairing and support brackets is the hardest part. unplugging and replugging isnt that difficult.

I've done two or three now. The biggest mistake is taking things further apart than you need to. I have an extra inner fairing so when someone wants to do one I give them that one & keep their unpainted fairing when we are done.I used a digital camera to take several pictures of where everything was at, printed the photos out in 8X10, and used them for reference to putit back together.
Pay attention to which speaker screws come out of which holes. They are not the same size and if you use the wrong one you'll punch a hole through the fairing
Also, it can be a pain to get the ingnition lock off (to get the lower dash piece off). Have one of the techs at your local shop show you how to do it.
It's very doable if you have minmal mechanical abilities...

I just did my bike (05Ultra) and my wifes bike (06 SG) dealer wanted $350.00 just each painted fairing plus $175.00 labour each.Since I am fairly handy I decided to do it myself it took app: 2.5 hours to get both inners off got paint code and went to local body shop with inners and codes in hand he painted both for $375.00 they look great and saved some cash.Make sure if you do this that they Know how to paint plastic there is some treatments that have to be done to plastic for paint to bond properly.

Good Luck
