Road King Won't Start
Needing some help getting her running.
Here's the situation: I bought a 2002 road king classic (FI) yesterday. Bike has sat for about a year and half untouched. The fellow put a new battery and about a gallon of gas in it prior to my arrival. Bike cranks and cranks and cranks, but won't fire up, need some advice. Here's what I've done so far: checked plugs for spark (looks good, but I'll have new plugs by 11am), pulled tank dumped gas and refilled with a few gallons, tried to pull any codes and all I got was engine light to come on and went off so I'm assuming no codes. I'll post pic when I get back out there. HELP I JUST WANT TO HEAR HER RUN TODAY! |

Yes when I turn the ignition, you can hear the fuel pump prime.

Here's a couple photos of the jumper cable I used on "what I believe is the data link connector" to pull codes. Please let me know if I am jumping the wrong connector.

Can anyone chime in and let me know if I am using the correct plug to try and pull diagnostic codes? This is the small plug located behind right side saddlebag.

Sorry, I can't answer the codes question but I'd lay money that the injectors are clogged from sitting so long. Get some starting fluid, remove the A/C and squirt the fluid into the intake. It should start and run a few seconds. If it does then you know the problem is the fuel system, and is probably the injectors. There are injector cleaning services if you don't mind removing them yourself.

You can also pulls the plugs to see if they are wet after attempting to start...........if not there is a fuel problem, wet other issues.

Well she fired up briefly (of course) with a few shots of starting fluid. Once the fluid burned off it dies. I did check the plugs, they do not appear to be wet.
I've never pulled injectors out, doesn't appear to be that difficult. Once the tank is off, they are clearly visible. Any recommendations/tips on pulling them off, what would constitute a clogged injector vs. not? I've read a few threads on a fuel line busting or getting a small hole in it, inside the tank. Anyway to test adequate pressure or a faulty line inside the tank, without having to remove fuel pump assembly? |
