Default Riding from Florida to Myrtle Beach... Best Route

A few years ago I had done the route from Daytona up 95 to SC exit 33 and then onto 17. It was a OK route. Now I just get my trip-tic from AAA and they say take 95 to SC exit 135 then onto 379. I really don't like all highway and liked the 50/50 split between highway -95 and backroads -17

My question is with route is a better riding trip for 2 up ?? Has the old 17 changed much ?? Is running an extra 100 miles on 95 worth it ?? Thanks in advance for all thoughts.

Be Safe JIM

17 from just north of savannah is mostly 4 lane now. Only problem is getting through Charleston. If you take that route don't hit Charleston during rush hours. 17 is a nice ride and better scenery than 95.

Don't hit Charleston during rush hour, and hold your breath riding through Georgetown. Other than that it's a nice quiet ride.

Yea I'm thinkin 17 as well. Great road and a lot more interesting than the super slab 95. I'm riding south that way this week, you can bet I'll get off 95 the first chance I get and will continue to MB on the back roads. I've ridden 17 from the south to Wash DC in the past.

Use 526 to get around Charleston if you are using 17, Charleston HD is right of 526 at Dorchester road. Once you are back on 17 heading north a biker friendly watering hole is Richards Bar and Grill. Good people and home made southern cooking and a good place to wait out rush hour traffic. If a Bar is not your thing and you need a food stop check out Jack's Cosmic Dogs up the road from Richards.
Another option is taking 17a. Mostly 2 lane to Summerville, 4 lane from Summerville to Monks Corner then back to 2 lane. Normally less traffic.

I like to make some tracks so I hit I 95 and then take the manning exit. Stop at shoneys on the left right after exit for a break and then 521 into georgetown. Its over the bridge and thru the woods to myrtle beach on 17 from georgetown. hope this helps.

FYI's
I 95 exit 42 half mile from 17....20 miles north (exit 58) it crosses back to the west of I 95... Exit 87 back over 95 with traffis starting in Richmond Hill until you get into South Carolina.
(Alternate for SAV 17/25 , 516 then cross the talmedge bridge into Sc and take 170 which realy is 17.) I would take 17 from exit 42 to exit 87 I 95 until you get across Ga / Sc state line.
Then Exit 8 Rt 278 and 178 to hit 17/ 21N again thru Beaufort That will take you into Charleston area.. Once N of Charleston it's pretty much no options
Those exit are probably the most efficient and good mix.
Been there done that many times living in this area
