Default Master Cylinder Leak Again!

Damn, I replaced both front and rear master cylinder covers and gaskets with the updated ones on my 2010 Street Glide. I also ensured that the covers were torqued to the new spec of 7 inch pounds instead of the 10-12. Dried everything off good and was fine for a couple of months. Yesterday I see all this seepage around the front master cylinders gasket again and noticed spots blown back on other parts. We all know what DOT 4 will do if not cleaned off immediately. I cleaned it up and re torqued but there has to be a permanent fix for this. The wind blowing those little droplets of fluid back on the tank might go unnoticed until it's too late. I'm thinking its wicking out through the two small vent holes notched in the cover? Anyone else have some ideas?

Sorry to hear your problem that's aggravating. Had the same problem on my fatboy. Nothing I did seemed to fix it. Finally had a trusted dealer tech try and apparently he knew something I didn't, problem solved. Good luck.

If you turn the cover upside down while servicing the MC the fluid runs down the gasket and builds up on the sealing surface. When you put the cover back on this fluid is trapped outside of the MC and will leak down the MC. Be sure to completely clean and dry the gasket before re installing the cover. Alcohol works well for cleaning the DOT 4 from the cover gasket.

Don't put too much fluid in the reservoir. An indication of too much fluid is excessive friction between the pads and the front rotors. If you have a wee bit too much, remember this stuff does not compress, so it has to go somewhere. Better to run a tad low yet with plenty of safety margin, IMHO, than to have too much.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I did clean the gasket and sealing surface as well as the cover. I'm also not over full? The new gasket and cover did fine for two months then started to weep again. What I'm going to try next since the gasket and cover is the modified version. is to tighten the screws a touch more then 7 inch pounds. Maybe they just loosend up a little. 7 inch pounds isn't much.

There should not be fluid on the top side of this gasket should there? Despite two new covers and 3 new gaskets, after a month or two when the seepage comes back and I open up the cover, there is fluid on the top side of the gasket right under the cover??

I replaced the covers on my 07 twice, finally the third time ESP agreed to just replace both master cylinders and that did the trick.

It's possible that the top of the resivor is warped.
