The Alaska Maritime Highway starts in Bellingham, WA and circumvents border crossings & is on my bucket list.
Yep. I've done the marine highway and it was great! Best way to go in every respect, IMO.
I've driven the Alcan 4 times - but never again! Canada can KMA! I have no legal or any other issue that would prevent me from entering or leaving that country, but I'd just as soon keep all my travel $$$ in the USA.

Right on......save your money for HF or Walmart. China depends on it.

Also, no pepper spray, mace, bear spray etc. unless it's changed in the past 9 years.
Bear spray is allowed - just crossed twice on my way up an back to Prudhoe Bay 2 weeks ago, and declared the BEAR spray as soon as I pulled up.
Note that PEPPER spray is not allowed, but if the same can is labeled BEAR spray it is ok. Can't be within reach of the rider while riding, however, and it is illegal to use it on anything but bears - so the border guard informed me. Of course he also told me bears don't come out on the road - wish he'd told the grizzly that stood on his hind legs and blocked my road <lol> I yielded to the grizzly, btw.

Your loss. By the way Canada would never KYA. You can SOD.
Without reading all the posts there is one issue that may cause you grief and it's not at the border.
If you are riding without DOT - double stickered (1 inside and 1 outside); approved helmet and you are stopped by our national GESTAPO (RCMP); your bike is ONLY moved by a vehicle carrier.
It doesn't matter where you are; there are no excuses accepted for riding with an illegal helmet.
I was just about to ask about the DOT requirement. So is there a Canadian version of the DOT or they just believe our DOT standards are applicable for Canadian riders?
A gentleman from Buffalo just suggested not to stay on the US side of the falls but I already have reservations there. Can I leave my bike and get a taxi across to the Canadian side. I don't use a DOT helmet. I grew up in the 70s not wearing a helmet and just never have been able to deal with the DOT type. I don't plan on doing anything more than a few hours on the Canadian side.
