Speedometer, cruise, & sixth gear indicator not working
I just registered today (7/28/2012). I need help trouble shooting a problem that started on my 2008 Road Glide. I have found some answers in this forum already. Part of this will summarize what I found with part numbers.
The problem: The speedometer quit working, the sixth gear indicator light stopped working, and cruise did not work. I started home thinking a fuse might have blown but all items started working before I got home. This rules out a fuse.
I have seen several discussions about the clutch interlock switch. This is the switch behind the clutch lever. The part number progression is: 71584-96, 71584-96A 71584-96B, and finally/current 71620-08.
I have found reference to a problem with the speed sensor (74402-256) on other forums. I did not find a discussion on HDFourms with this part.
I think I understand how the clutch interlock can cause the sixth gear indicator and cruise to quit. I don’t understand how it would stop the speedometer.
I understand how the speed sensor would make the cruise and speedometer stop. I think I understand how it could stop the sixth gear indication since this is a math function from the ECM and not a mechanical indication of being in that gear.
I did not check if the bike would start in gear with the clutch pulled in. I did not know about this. I also would have had to shut off the bike, which might have reset the problem.
I had stopped the bike once and shifted gears several times. The three items start working on their own after I came to a stop the second (maybe third) time.
Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated. I hope this is in the correct section.

the speedo sensor is a magnetic pick up, pull it and wipe the steel filings off on it with a rag.
that solves most speedo problems and is a free, no cost fix.
the speedo sensor is on top of the tranny, held in place with an allen screw.
you can find diagrams at:

welcome to the forums
spacing out your post makes it a little easier to read- at this point most bagger riders use reading glasses...!

Thanks for the replys.
I will check the speed sensors for filings.
The bike is stock right now. I bought it used about Oct 2011 and no mods had been made.
I will probably change the intake, exhaust, and add a tuner. I am looking that the Thundermax tuner. I am going to look for post on it.
Sorry about the spacing, I use reading glasses also. I compose in MS Word and then paste the message. I forgot to preview the post.
