directional arrow.

talked to Avon rep. She said that it shouldn't be a problem. Usually takes a few thousand miles to cause issues but that if I'm not comfortable, I'm well within my rights to ask them for a new tire. (she had a term for what happens..but i didn't right it down and forgot it already)

Compounding the problem is J&P says it wasn't them that mounted the tire. And I guess, now that I'm involved in this, it wasn't. They had a guy contract space from them to do installations...however, I (or anyone that was probably there) had no idea it was a different place. J&P reps told me to go schedule install with them, J&P people were in there tent...etc. It's really probably more the installers f-up, but I think J&P has some responsibility of some kind as well. We'll see what they come back with......cust svc lady is forwarding it to "upper management".

It used to be that the front tire was mounted with the direction arrow backwards....It was due to stopping....I don't know if it is still like that or not.....Just had a new one installed the other day....Will check it out.....

Not sure if its possible on your bike but the brake rotors are directional also could they have put the wheel in backwards? If you do not have ABS I think this could happen.
The arrow for disk direction is between 2 of the bolts that mount it to the wheel.

Take it to a small shop, get it flipped, and ride away. 900 miles isn't anything on these things. Definitely not enough to make them fall apart. You'll be fine.

I mean, sure. Pushing to get a new tire will be nice if you get it, but if you don't, I wouldn't go out and drop another couple hundred on a new tire just because you're worried because someone on the internet said it wasn't safe. Use your brain. Cars with radial tires go in reverse, but they don't fly apart when they drive forward.

Hey J&P,

This is an opportunity to show the marketplace that the company can make right when an error is made.

How about it- I would LOVE to read later in this thread that the customer was contacted by J&P and that a new tire is on it's way to a local shop who will take care of the mounting and will return the mis-mounted tire to J&P.

C'mon Guys.

I had this error made a couple of times on one of my bikes- the 69-70 front end had a drum brake on the right side ( unlike the left for the 49~68 models.) installers would look at the wheel and just "put it on the way we always do".

this happened even after I started marking the direction with a marker and detailing it on the work order(s).

In each case the shop made good

mike

yeah, you're right, my brain tells me it'll be ok, but it was a guy that has worked on my bike before and has been doing it for who knows how many years that told me it won't be alright. not some yahoo on the internet. (although maybe he is one )

That was a long time ago, when some tyres could be fitted on the rear or front, reversed on the front. I don't think I have had any tyres like that since the 1980s!

Only some and by no means all of them. The Harley rotors with what I will call bent spokes are directional. I have button-type floating rotors all round on my Glide and they are not.

Rock Chalk, I'm with Thet on this now! Get the darned thing reversed asap and put it down to experience. I've used Avons on my Harleys since the 70s and they are just great. I don't think yours will let you down.
