Default How hard is it to change a starter?

Buddy's 02' Road KIng needs a starter change. The new starter should be in this week. We're thinkin' we can do it.
Any experienced starter changers out there?>

pretty easy- disconnect the battery first !

the old starter is pretty easy to service--- if he has already bought a new one, save the old one.

the manual will detail how to fix it, which might be a fun project. and if he bought an ebay starter, he may be looking to change that one out at some point

good time to swap out to new battery cables

Easier to change on the TC96's than the 88's, but as stated its not all too difficult. A manual will do you justice.

Disconnect negative cable at battery. Disconnect positive cable at starter. Drain oil from primary. Remove shifter and left floor board. Remove primary cover. Unfold lock tab from starter drive and remove 10/32 bolt. Remove the bolt at the exhaust bracket side if starter and at the rear of starter. Remove starter. Reverse procedure being careful to torque properly. Purchase service manual so you can disassemble to get the inner primary apart because you have to helicoil the inner to get the starter bolt to tighten where you stripped it out. Have fun! :-)
