In Colorado, my stock '11 RKC pinged alot with both 91 and 93 octane. 91 was worse than 93. Dealer was no help. Powercommander PC-V has cured all that. The original tune from Fuelmoto pinged a little, so had them send me a new one, and it's been great since. A tuner is key, just get one and enjoy the bike.

I'll agree with "octane is octane" to a certain point. However the amount of corn in the gas does make a difference in how it burns. Don't believe me? Next time your scooter needs gas fill it with some E85. It has an octane rating of 105. Let me know how that works for you!
Not to pick a fight or anything, but ethanol is ethanol, no? The problem with E85 is the amount of ethanol, not how its derived.

I dont see any corn in the pic below.

Any one with a new "pinging" heat generating bike happen to have a PV tuner?

I would love to see a copy of an oem map from one of these, for I have had 0 issues with mine @ the 2200 mile mark (including the dreaded Cat heat generation).

I downloaded the "stock modified" map from Dynojet just to compare and mine is set up pretty "soft" from an EPA standpoint, and it makes me real curious if the moco is doing updated revs on their maps in leau of some of the issues.

If someone has a copy of an oem, pm me and we can swap to compare,

Thanks,
Bob

Mine pings enough to try a differed tuner and dyno it again.Mine pinged from the start and totally stock. I got rid of the cat, differend mufflers,cams,a/c and harley race tuner. No difference. Im about to try the old harlery race tuner tts- and get it re-dyno'd. And i only use 93 octane........

My 2012 RK pinged after it got to a normal running temperature. I took it back to the dealer and they ordered a new ECM and installed it and my bone stock 103 is ping free. The same dealer also has done it for a friend but the bike has to be stock. It feels stronger and definitely sounds better. I live in Kansas City Mo and the dealer is in the north part of the city.

I'm not sure the tech was called up to the counter and asked me if the bike was stock. After we talked he looked over the bike wrote down some numbers and made a phone call. when he got off the phone he stated that a new ECM was on the way and he would call me when it arrived. It took him about 45 minutes to complete it and I as on my way.

I'm not sure I understand where you are going. I'm not looking for an argument either. But if there is too much ethanol in E85, can't it be possible to have the correct amount in a 10 or 15 percent blend? The point I tried to make was that ethanol free 91 octane does indeed burn different than 91 octane with ethanol.

Of course I am not basing this info on anything other than hear-say and popular opinion. And I'll be the first to admit that those can both be WAY wrong!

They said they believe me though because they've had a couple others come in complaining about ping in their 103's. So, they are keeping my work order open. They did replace my spark plugs as an inexpensive place to start. Now for the "best" part...

According to my dealer there is an update coming from the MOCO for the ECM that is supposed to address the pinging issue that so many are experiencing. That's might be good news. They are going to call the MOCO again to find out when that update will be available. And....

Here's the part of my talk with the mechanics and service manager that I found interesting. They recommended I use 10% ethenol at 91 or better octane if I can. According to them these bikes are made now to use the ethenol. They said not to use E85 but 10% is perfectly fine and is better for the motor because it burns cleaner. They said that may help with the pinging too. This is news to me. Has anyone heard anything similar?????
What they are stating "it burns cleaner" is, less deposit in the cylinder, less carbon build up on top of piston keeping compression at the norm and not aiding in higher compression ping.
