Figured I'd post in this forum
I figured i'd post this here, as no one has responded over in the correct section of the forum and it also doesn't seem like they do a lot of their own work...
My father's bike is a 2000 road king EFI 88". We loaded the bike up on the trailer, everything was fine. We drove 1300 miles to FL and unload the bike. Start it up to move it into the garage and there's a loud tick. No oil pressure light, plenty of oil in the bike. Any idea what's causing it? Sounds like a valve-train tick, but can't tell from which head. I will try to find a stethoscope while i'm down here. someone also suggested a chunk of carbon fell off from all the bumps during transport and is bouncing around in the chamber. Thanks for any help |
"No oil pressure light", okay you have oil pressure. Chunk of carbon (to me) is BS. IF it's a slight tick it, get a automotive stethoscope and track it down, just trailering shouldn't cause a problem.

The tick was not there before the hauling then?

I think someone posted about this type of problem after trailering a few weeks ago. It was lifter related. Something about the lifters losing their oil from bouncing down t,he road with spring pressure on them and with no oil pressure to keep them pumped up. Maybe try a search for trailering and ticking sounds here.

I had a ticking sound 2 weeks ago, was driving me nuts, I finally spotted it, the finned head bolt bridge adapters that bolt to the headbolt were loose, look at part no 43895-00 for pic

Thanks for the responses...the noise is gone. Took out both plugs and cranked the bike but nothing blew out. Started the bike again and it was quieter then went away completely. Im guessing a stuck lifter

happy ending.
FYI; improvised stethoscope from a screwdriver or any solid hose...even a piece of pvc pipe, placed from the ear bone to the suspect areas |
If a bike is in gear and on a trailer it will still move a little back and forth pushing on the engine, if the engine is moving a little it probably pushed the oil out of a lifter, mechanic told me that once.

I felt bad for him because we drove 1300 miles down to fl for biketoberfest. Its been quiet.all week. Think we should leave the bike in neutral on the way home?
