Won't start after small changes
 
Preface:

I am no wrench!

The story:

Yesterday, I had a snow day at home with my bike (oh yeah, my kids were home too). I figured it would be a great opportunity to install the Arlen Ness Big Sucker Stage I air cleaner and Vance & Hines Twin Slash Round Slip-Ons.

Despite my lack of technical skills, it went very well. The Big Sucker instructions sucked but i found a great video on the Arlen Ness web site. A monkey could have installed the slip-ons. Both istalls gave me a chance to use my new torque wrench.

I got everything put back together and cleaned up the pipes to prevent discoloration. I unplugged my battery tender and fired up the bike.

OMG!!! :icon_headbang:

The pipes sound great! I let it idle for about 10 minutes, revved it a few times, and shut it down.

Now to the problem:

My wife got home a few hours later and asked me to fire it up so she could hear it. I turned the ignition, flipped the engine run switch (heard typical fuel pump noise), and pushed the start button. CLICK. That's all I get.

I have checked to verify that I am in neutral. Shifted in and out of gear, rolled the bike a few feet, and engaged clutch.

A little background:

I bought this bike last fall and had a similar problem. Turns out the previous owner had replaced the plug going to the starter with a plug that did not lock into place. He used it as a anti-theft device. After I rode the bike home for the dealership, it wouldn't start. The dealership came and picked it up, fixed it, and replaced the plug the factory plug that locks in.

Now, I am home with the bike (and the kids) for a second consecutive snow day. This is driving me crazy. Any ideas?

just getting a click like that could really only mean a few things... dead battery, bad sarter solenoid or loose connection somewhere between the battery and starter. Guess i'd start with putting a battery charger on it and see what that says, start with the easiest thing first.

My first thought is to make sure the run/stop switch is in the "run" position. Next would be to check the battery voltage. Always start with the simple stuff first.

Put the tender on it til it's charged and try it again, if it works right after removing it, I'd suggest a new battery.

Where did you hear the click? At the starter or under the seat carb side?

Battery is fine. It fired right up the first time. I check the connection at the battery and the starter.

Doesn't mean your battery is OK. You said you had the battery connected to a tender and disconnected it and started it. Battery could be bad...just sayin'

check your ground cable at the battery and at the frame. Make sure no corrosion exists and the connections are tight at both ends.
