Default What model years have interchangeable exhaust fitment?

There is a sweet deal on a 2 into 1 exhaust system for sale in the touring parts. Problem is it is from a newer bike. I have seen exhaust systems advertised for fitment on 96-2012 and of coarse seperatly for 96-07, and 2008 and newer. I have heard that the ports on a 96 are both a different size and angled differently than a 88. Can anyone tell me if this is true?

I have a 2008 aftermarket system on my 1990 Glide, bolted straight on (with blanking plugs for the O2 sensor holes). That is the latest year that will retrofit earlier bikes AFAIK. Later bikes have a different frame, so I suspect alignment of the pipes will be different to earlier bikes.

Thanks Mr. Brown.
I am starting to think the multi fit models are because they come with both the 12mm o2 bungs, wheras the models specific to 96-09 have ONLY 18mm bungs, and 10-later have 12mm bungs. Now I am hearing the exhaust ports on all models are the same angle and location across all years.

I thought about putting '09 pipes on my '08 because the routing is a little different. Supposed to be less heat by the passenger's foot. Was told they would fit, no problem.

I've often wondered this same thing. I have an extra set of V&H Big radius 2:2 for my '09 I've been wanting to sell, but I have no idea what other year models they fit on. It seems I've heard of some exausts that fit on 09's and 09's only. I guess I should just call V&H, if anyone knows it's got to be them.

generally header pipes "should" fit for 1984.5 to 2008 models.

in 2009 the frame changed- and is wider at the rear- some aftermarket headers may fit- stock configuration headers will not fit the 2009+ frame.

2009+ header may fit earlier frame models with spacers on the mounts- and some fiddling- but not a direct bolt on

once physical fit is determined, o2 sensors ( or not) are a consideration.

the pre/post 1995 muffler fitment issue is due to a change in header pipe flange at the muffler

Hey guys, I know its a bit off from the original topic here but I found a 2-1 exhaust for a 2017 Softail... I have a 2008 xl1200n, now I know they're completely different bikes but it's such a sweet deal, it hard to pass up.. so I guess what I'm asking is how different are these two bikes exhaust set ups? I can Tig welding and whatnots to modify if needed but is it worth it or would a guy even be able to make this work?

There are a lot pre 09 bikes with newer pipes. They just need an 09 or newer oil pan. I think I’ve seen a bracket from exhaust manufacturers. I’ve seen used pans on eBay for $100.

It may well be possible to make it work, but its a darned sight easier to start with one that fits! What looks like a 'sweet deal' could take up a lot of effort and messing around. Personally I recommend you search for a system designed for your Sporty and give yourself an easy time installing it.
