2008 Ultra 5th gear whining noise
I have a 08 with 18k miles, and when accelerating in 5th gear the transmission make a whine noise, but not really in any other gear... I know there has been people complaining of noisy transmissions, so is this normal for this year bike? is there anything I can to do quite it down?

Normal. Difference between helical cut and straight cut gears. Run shockproof heavy by redline or other comparable tranny gear oil to assist in quieting

Fifth gear uses straight cut gears, hence gear whine is normal in fifth. How loud will be somewhat dependant upon what gear lube you run. If you stay with HD branded, the Formula+ should be a bit quieter than Syn3.
Others may have other choices of lubes to add some quieting...

Straight cut gears make a little noise, but they're strong. Turn up the radio and enjoy the ride is what I do. Ever hear of Fortin Transaxles? They scream super loud, but they are the strongest built for the offroad industry.

My 2008 FLHTC has had the noisy 1st and 5th gear since new. Nothing to worry about like others have said...

My 08 Heritage was really bad as well. I used Spectro 6 speed trans oil, worked great once in about 50 to 100 miles quiet as a church mouse. Works great!

All the above are correct but pay attention to how loud it is. Over the four years I've had my 09 Ultra I never noticed that the sound was getting louder. By the time I figured out there might be an issue I had a bad main shaft bearing plus main shaft damage. Since fixed it is significantly quieter. Pay extra close attention to ANY noises when at idle, like a whirring sound. It's amazing how quiet 5th is now even though there is stil the small whine from the straight cut gears.
