Default Garmin 665 question...

I hope this is the right section.... I'm in the market for a GPS and have been told (because I know nothing about electronics) that the Garmin 665 is the same GPS unit as sold in HD dealerships....
I understand this unit has XM Radio... If I buy the Garmin 665, hook it up to the power source,, do I still need the Road Tech Navigation Interface Module???

Or am I able to hook the Garmin 665 to the power source and just plug it into the auxiliary port on the face of the stock radio ('13 Street Glide).

I am interested in hearing XM Radio,, when GPS directions are given, the music quiets and the directions are heard. Both through the stock speakers..
Thank you...

no module needed IF the music source is from the gps, either mp3 or xm.for using the fm or am on the harley head unit u would need the interface or not hear the gps.when the head unit is set to aux it will only play what is coming from the gps.

Yes when you hook it up this way the directions will be given when needed and the music (XM) will mute. My son has this set up on his 06 ultra and it works great...

You can not use the navigation interface module (NIM) with the garmin unit, only roadtech has whatever signal is needed to trigger it. I thought it sucked without the nim unit and have had a garmin and a roadtech unit. consider carefully before choosing and i think the hd unit has 2 yr warr and garmin 1 yr. Mike

One thing to think about is, whether you ever want the interface or not. The reason I mention this is because although the Garmin 665 and the HD RT665 are the same units the software version is different and the Garmin unit will not work with the interface. Only the HD unit will operate with the interface. Just wanted to mention this so you wouldn't decide later that you wanted to mount the unit on the dash and use the interface, and then find out it doesn't work.

Guess while I was talking and not typing someone else was thinking the same thing, anyway now you have two posts about thinking about it, and one that makes my point , that I know several people have done.

The "NIM" allows the signal from the nav unit to cut in and broadcast over the radio while muting the radio. More or less integrates the roadtech xm/gps. Mike

There is a difference between a RoadTech unit and all of the others, no matter the number. If you want everything to work as expected with the NIM, etc., get the RoadTech. I did, and I love mine....works great.
