Latest update, I'm at home, pulled the batwing and started tracing again. The problem is that it's one of the wires that goes through the throttle grip harness that is grounding out, but i still can't tracewhere the break is. There is about 50 wires in there. Back to the old plan of getting a complete new wiring harness.
Man, I hate to say it but your dealer s**cks. I've been in similar situations and my dealer always tells me to grab some coffee in the lounge and they'll get somebody to look at the problem as soon as they can. Sorry to hear of your troubles.
I really hope this is the last update on this stupid problem. The dealer took another stab at fixing my wiring problems, and it is the best looking work I have seen yet. They found another four broken wires and replaced them, and then wrapped and heat sealed all of the harness. Clamped it to the frame in about 10 spots. Plus I didn't have to pay for this repair. I hope this is finally fixed.
Skip, I'll keep this bike, but do want to build a chop. Unfortunatly I have another three years of mortgage left, so no major toys for a while. In 3 years and two days I will be grinding a frame!
Joe,
So do you have any insight into why you had all this trouble with the wires? Did the dealer offer any explaination? I would be curious to know if it was a mistake from the factory or something they would consider normal wear and tear.
From what I have gathered, the 01's (FLH's and cop bikes) had a wiring harness that was too short, and when the engine rocks around at idle the wires get stretched and eventually break. I heard that it was changed in 02, but I don't have proof yet. It's really hard to get real detailed parts info and parts changes info from HD. I guess that the harness being worked on so many times just put additional pressure on the already weak wires. It's just that the new bikes have so many wires it's hard to inspect them all. I hope this is it for this problem.
