Question Broken stud inside rear fender...

Have taken my bike ('11 Roadglide Ultra) essentially completely apart for a deep cleaning/inspection. Most everything execpt engine/trans/primary/swingarm/ and inner fairing were removed.

Wanted to have the rear fender repainted due to scuffing from the orginal seat/ comm cable damage.

During the dissassembly of the rear fender, the stud on the inside lower part of the fender snapped. No problem I thought, I'll just have the painter replace it while he's got it for paint....

I've got everything back together, just waiting on the fender (4 weeks into a 2 week completion estimate.)

Talked with the painter last night and he's trippin'! It's painted & buffed out, ready to go but.... he forgot about the stud. Says he's NEVER seen that happen before, and has no idea how to remove/replace it! This guy paints for several dealerships in the North Ga area, and has an impecable reputation.

The stud DOES NOT show as a seperate part from the fender (pn 59378-09DH,) and goes through the saddlebag to fender support bracket (pn 91140-09.)

So the question is...

Isn't the "stud" just a carriage bolt that is tack welded into the rear fender? Couldn't the weld just be ground off and another tacked in place? I can't imagine that the entire rear fender is replaced (@ list $527.33) everytime one of these is broken/damaged...

Am I missing something here?

Anyone else run into this problem before?

Yep... that's the diagram.

Notice it doesn't show the stud, (or refference a p/n.)

Sure it can be ground off and another welded in its place. Too bad your painter didn't do that before painting. Too many fumes I guess.....snip

That's what I thought, snip.

I guess I just don't understand why he's trippin'!

Grind the weld, pop it out, install replacement, & tack from the inside... what's difficult about that?

Any heat generated from the tack that blisters the paint will be hidden by the emblem that covers from the outside.

Simple proceedure in my book, just putting it out here to see if I'm missing something...
