Low oil temp, is this possible?
 

I installed the HD oil temp fairing gauge. (2013 FLTRU)

It was about 52 degrees and sunny as I headed home from a friends where we installed it, about a 35 mile highway ride.

It took about 16 miles on the highway to get to 170 degrees. I'd say it barely got past 185 during the highway part.

After I got off the highway for the last couple of miles to my house, it got *maybe* to 200 degrees after stop lights.

When was working (it stopped working well over a year ago), after a trip like that my oil gauge would easily be at or above 230)

Anyone else have this experience? Thoughts?

That mirrors my experiences with the gauge. It takes a while to heat up the oil on a cool day, plus the location / design of the sensor and probe in the pan may also be a factor. But it does seem to take a long time to get up over 180 on a cool day, but it will, and I have seen 250 on a 100 degree day. I have also seen the temp on long downgrades actually drop 10-20 degrees. So from my experiences I think you are doing OK, just takes a while for the oil to heat up and register.

ok, thanks. It just seemed like it took forever to go up! Oil pressure was good, so that's not an issue, but It just truck me as strange.

That's how mine operates. So normal I think.

If you think that is interesting wait till that time when you're operating at full temp and run into rain.
It's amazing to see how fast the oil temp drops from 220-ish to zip in like 10 seconds. lol

Yes. Below 60°, my jagg-cooled, no thermostat, bike runs very low temps when not stop-n-go. 170° - 180°. I do not worry. Were I to frequently ride in cold temps I'd shield the radiator with heavy aluminum foil.

Do you have an oil cooler?

Most all bikes actually take awhile for oil temps to come up. Had a Suzuki 4 cylinder that had gauge installed on it, took forever for it to go up as well. I knew the gauge wasn't lying when I changed the oil after going on a 20 mile ride and not having my hands screaming to wipe the oil away from being hot.

Rode Saturday in 50 degree weather 2010 flhx stock, true duals no cat. temp never got higher than 210 on highway and drop quick to 200 and below once slowed down. Gas mileage also takes a bit of a hit.
