This happened to me yesterday. Took it to the dealer they have all charging parts on hand say I'll get it back by Friday. Just in time to go Up North to Rolling Thunder.........Big test. Under warranty. they say it will cost HD about 700 dollars. Whole charging system is messed up. Rode about 10 miles with lights on engine and battery. 19600 miles on the bike this should not be happening to a 25k sticker bike, even if I only paid 20
Had the same issue with my 2010 Ultra. Same result, stator short. Took me 6 hours and a weekend with the manual to replace but cheaper than the $575 the dealer wanted.
Just got the call, my bike is finished. Stator and VR replaced under warranty. First complaint of it... My dealer didn't wait til I came back a second time. Find a new dealer

I use a (250V) crank Megger to trace this kind of issue.
Since you worked your way to the stator, did you repair it?
Folks who rewind motors can do it quickly for you then you have a spare.

Went to 3 other dealers...no one will do anything to remedy the issue. Did find one dealer that I had to pay to do a charging system check ( $80) and they said everything was fine. Felt as though I had to do this at a minimum just for piece of mind. They checked the stator, VR, battery , connections etc. and found nothing . They also said they can do nothing unless it does it again. He$$ 3 other dealers would not even do the diagnostics on it.
Soooo guess I am going to Kentucky this weekend on a prayer that I do not have issues. Harley warranty sure sucks..... Seems they will only fix things around here when they break for good and not even think about it if it something that is on its way to failing.

Find a real automotive electrician, preferably one with dirty hands. These folks know what to do.
