Default 3M or Xpel over time, still good?

I know there's been a lot of threads discussing paint protection films but I was curious of everyone's opinions after they have had it on their bikes and trikes for several years.

I have heard that they can build up wax and dirt along the edges making that film edge much more visible over time.

I live on gravel roads and want to do what I can to protect it early. I know normal road debris will happen just trying to avoid the excessive gravel chips from riding a lot of gravel.

I've had the 3M film on the fenders of my 2011 FLHXXX since May 2011 and I have no build up along the edges. I take great pains to ensure that I clean around the edges with a regular Q-tip or a detailing Q-tip after waxing or detailing the trike though. You probably would get buildup if you don't clean it, but in all reality it doesn't matter as long as you're protecting the paint from chips.

Additionally, the film can always be removed and replaced with new stuff, so clean it while it's off.

Using a Q-tip as the previous posted stated is what the installer advised me to use on the expel.
