No, it's a sound like an electric starter.

I am not a HD mechanic (or any kind of mechanic actually), but I would suggest a couple of trouble-shooting steps. Have you tried actually using the reverse to put it in the garage so you can just pull out forward? Or, shift through 1st and second and then back to 1st? Just some ideas. I find it odd that some folks don't use reverse on their TG's. My driveway is a steep downhill and if I didn't back it from the street (coast backwards to garage) to put it away I would have a real challenge getting it out. It is too steep to back up the driveway. If I only have a foot or two to go backwards and it's level I don't mind doing it the "Fred Flintstone" way with my legs. But, if it's more than that or uphill I hit the reverse. We pay way too much for these bikes to not use every feature they have. Would you buy a TG if it didn't have reverse? Not me. It's there to use.

Evidently some didn't! Have you tried just tripping the reverse breaker or fuse and see if the noise is still there? Also, does the sound it makes resemble the sound you hear when you hit the engine start button with the engine already running?

This is exactly what i would try. Takes the reverse motor out of the picture. Does it make this noise when sitting still or moving ? If moving i'm leaning towards first gear whine.
