2016 or 2017 TG?

Thinking of trading my Freewheeler in for a TG. The dealership will give me top $ for my FW if I take the 2016 making the 2016 about 5K cheaper than the 2017. Any thought?

msocko3 09-08-2016 04:37 AM

I'd go 16, 1st couple years of a new design isn't always good.

bronxbill 09-08-2016 05:42 AM

For that kind of savings, I'd go with the 16. If you buy the 17, you will become one of HD's Beta testers; they always let their customers find the problems with new engines

wingfoot 09-08-2016 08:46 AM

My thoughts are a little different from the two previous posters;

If you go with the 16 you still have the Twin Cam engine with all it's baggage. I have had three TC's since 2010 and have not been a happy camper. I have thrown money in it to get more power (about where the 17 is) and still have that annoying engine noise. You will be a engine generation behind if that matters.

I will (have ordered a new 17 TG) live with the bugs that is needed to work out; too early to tell at this time if any or how significant they will be.
WARRANTY...

Just my 2 cents...

Get the 17 and extended warranty I am considering getting one. Tired of the noise and heat. Don't get me wrong I'm keeping Old Shiney but would like a New one also, may be a new color Black ride safely Fred

If the 17 is a winner . Then you will be about 5 k in the hole on the 16 when it come trade in time. I would hold off till mid summer. See how it goes . Only bad thing about forms is that you hear more about negative then positive. I had a 14 and was very happy with the limited. .But I wanted a trike and traded down 1 yr . There are some things I miss on the 14. As for myself unless there is a big big difference. I'm sticking with the 13 TG. Its paid for .

Buy the 17.... A-year from now you''ll pull up next to a 16, And look over at the 16 and say ' Nice Trike... But old Technology!

Backdraft161 09-08-2016 03:58 PM

I recently purchased a 2016 TG over the 2017. I could not see the advantage over the 16 and the added 4 grand to buy.
I trade in a 2010 ultra limited with the 103. So i know about the heat issue. Never had a problem with the heat. They all are hot standing still. I prefer not to be a ginny pig at 40k price tag.
Just my own preference for the 2016.

Oogie Wa Wa 09-08-2016 08:33 PM

I bought the '14 and yeah, maybe I was a guinea pig, but I don't regret it. So I'd say go for the '17 if that's what you want. Worse comes to worst, you end up with your ride in the shop for a day or two getting some new bugs fixed under warranty.

Having said that, I have no urge to even look at the '17s, I'm happy with mine just the way it is. Although I've discussed about the heat here, and I like tinkering with ideas, it's never really bothered either me or my wife enough to actually do much about it. Jeez, it's not that bad. Move the fairing or lowers vents a little, that usually takes care of it.

And noise? What noise? I like the sound. Isn't it supposed to sound like this? The vibration, too. The only noise that would bother me would be a louder exhaust if I did anything about the heat. Nope, I like it just fine the way it is, thank you.

The first of its kind new generation in an trike that has improved itself every year almost to me is no brainer unless money is a problem. $5000 makes a lot of improvements to a 16 and it doesn't cost that much if you can do it yourself.

Fusionfool 09-09-2016 11:47 AM

Test drive each, then see what the power difference is. See if you can really feel it in the seat.
As far as Heat, it is going to be an issue with both. Always is, always will be until they go full liquid cooled. As lean as they have to tune these machines, you can guarantee heat won't go away. Maybe a bit cooler, but not enough to satisfy.

My buddy and I just had this conversation. We each bought new 2016 Trikes within a week of each other two months ago.

His opinion: if he would have known that the 2017's had the 107's he would have passed on the 2016. He wants more power and would have jumped on a 2017 as soon as a close by dealer had a red one available.

My opinion: We both paid about $5,000 less than we would have paid for a 2017. Since we both ride daily we tend to run up a lot of miles each year on our bikes. By buying a 2016 late in the model year we will be a little ahead of the game on miles. Plus I am not a huge fan of owning any new motor that anyone bring out the first year.

Conclusion: if I was making the decision today I would simply make a really good deal on the 2016, then wait and see how the 107's do. If there are zero issues with them then right when the 2018's are coming out I would either sell and buy or trade.

If you bought the 2017 and wanted to do performance upgrades then you wouldn't have that many available for at least 6 months.

1plumr1 09-10-2016 11:30 PM

For 5K you can do the 110 bolt on wet head kit and more. Or the 117 kit plus a little $. I'd do that 'cause I'm a displacement and hp junkie.

captbob 09-11-2016 05:03 AM

I keep looking at my 2016 TGU that I have put 14k miles on and a select group of farkles that make the ride just the way I want it (DK Custom lift kit and floor board extenders, Bad Ass flashing tail lights, updated Infotainment system software, rear bumper and luggage rack, Kuryakyn cruiser pegs, adjustable rider backrest, Dunlop American Elite front tire and HD Gripper grips). When I think about the fact that I like my ride so much and it runs so well, the appeal of the '17 M8 TGU diminishes greatly. Sure, I like the latest technology, but the M8 is still an unproven lump in the hands of the public and only time will tell us how it holds up. I think I will continue to ride the wheels off of my trike and maybe in 2018 or 2019, think about possibly moving to the newer configuration? By then, I will be about 70 years old and likely thinking that spending what will likely be another $10k may not be worth it? This may be my last Harley?

Baxter's Bagger 09-11-2016 10:50 PM

All comments seem to focus on the Milwaukee Eight engine. I was just as impressed with the new rear suspension. No air means more reliable and much easier adjustments.
The 2017's will be a hit, just not for me for a couple of years.

This is news to me. Are you suggesting that the 2017 Tri Glide has done away with the rear air suspension shock scheme? How does one easily adjust the rear shocks for different loads?

bronxbill 09-12-2016 06:28 AM

I have looked at a 2017; as far as I can see, they still have the air shocks

wingfoot 09-12-2016 07:26 AM

Yes the Trikes will continue to have the air suspension as previous years. The valve to inflate is in the same place as earlier models.

I just bought one this weekend hopefully they will get all the add-ons installed by Wednesday so I take a sick day and RIDE........

OK... so after reading some great opinions (thank you all), talking to others off this forum and doing my own "research" I pulled the trigger today. I decided to trade in my 16 FW to get a new 2016 TG (black with chrome lower fork legs). For these reasons I made the move: was given a deal I could not refuse (about 6k less than the 2017 would have been), available mods and figured I'd wait to see how the new motor does for a couple years OR wait for the CVO TG to come out somewhere down the road. I thank everyone for their input and can't wait to take delivery Friday afternoon!!
