Can you put a toddler car seat on a trike?
 

Hello!
I have an almost 4 year old and I wanted to know if it's possible to get a car seat that would safely and securely fit on the back of a trike?
I won't put her on a traditional motorcycle for obvious reasons but I felt like the back of a trike would be a lot safer for her. We are only getting the bikes for lazy cruising on Tennessee country roads and on slower roads around town, so there won't be any interstate travel or using the trike as a primary means of transportation. Just a little weekend fun. :)

This is going to be an interesting thread. Car seat on a trike.......not sure. I am sure someone could manage to get a car seat strapped down in the rear passenger area, but it would take some doing to find good anchor points without rubbing on the paint somewhere. I have no idea what the safety experts would say about a car seat on a trike or bike. My first though was no, they wouldn't recommend it, but I am sure others will say it is ok. I guess it really depends on what you hit, or what hits you in the event of an accident, and how severe the hit is.

Do they even make DOT helmets for toddlers?

You'll have to check your local laws. Some states require passengers to reach the footpegs. But if you made some custom pegs?

Do you have a tour pack? Preferably one with the arm rests? At that point your 90% there.

Hhope you have thick skin cuz I see this thread going south quick. Personaly I say good for you for wanting to start what will probably be a lifelong obsession. One of my firsy memories of childhood was riding on the tank of my old man bike.

Honestly, I don't have a bike at all yet. My husband and I would really like to start riding together, but if I can't safely include our little, then the hubs will have to ride solo.
The key word there is 'SAFELY'. Since I don't know a ton about trikes and couldn't find anything on the internet, I thought I'd start here with the pros to see if it's even possible. I didn't know if there was any type of mod you could get for a 5 point harness for her size or even if there was a car seat maker that specialized in something like this. Only as a novice (if I can even call myself that)- I assumed the larger wheelbase in the back would make a safer and more stable ride for her, but I could be wrong about that.

We're really good and involved parents with our kiddo, and we sure as hell don't want to put her in any danger. As someone who's only seen trikes on the road, it was just a thought that it might be a way to include her in something we'd really like to do together. :)

Here is a link to a high end harness. Amazon has some less expensive ones. We looked into the ridrzragz when the grands were smaller. Did see where one guy had adapted a carseat complete with handlebars.

That harness is awesome! Thank you!! I would much rather her be tethered to me as opposed to the bike.

I went down to the Harley dealership at lunch to ask them about what was available locally and their thoughts on this subject and they said not to tether or 5 point harness her to the bike at all which makes total sense after they explained it. He recommended a tour pack and a back rest for me (the driver) and that will almost completely cocoon her in. I think adding that harness (if possible with the back rest) would be really ideal.
The dealership is also going to help me out with a little research on the laws to make sure this is doable legally. :)
