Default V Rod Brake Light

Need some help with a brake light staying on. Have checked the rear switch it ohms out correctly, as does the front switch in the housing. On the connection in the frame it appears to be shorted. I have heard at one time about some harness issues, any help would be great. Thanks Marvin.

Marvin

if it was shorted i would expect a fuse to blow.

recheck the front brake lever. if you have made any adjustments to the front brake lever position or master cyl the button for the brake light switch may not depress when the brake lever is released and the brake light will stay on.

Well I unplugged the harness from the right controll pod and light stayed on. The two wires are orange and red, I have 12 .7 volts on the feed wire and 11.1 on the return wire. It is a completion of that circuit. they are shorted in the harness somewhere, although I have twisted the harness from end to end but cant get the short to go away. The rear is un hooked as well it is wires rubbed together or pinched I guess, I sure dont want to have to replace the harness.

does sound like the wires have some how gotten together if you have bypassed the switch. and the brake light.

you have probably already tried this but what happens if you disconnect the wires from the hydaulic brake switch. also check that area there is a lot going on in the area espicially near the exhaust of the brake light switch that may caused the wires to rub or burn thru and short together without actually going to ground and blowing the fuse. Unfortunately i am out of town on business and don't have access to my service manual to reference the routing of the harness.

also if you haven't done this check under the left front cover at the steering head. the wires from the handlebars are connected there thru a 4 pin connector for each left and right side controls and then run down the left side frame rail toward the fuse box and back to the rear from there. if you unplug that connector and the problem is still there then at least you know the problem is not with the wires from the handlebars.

keep at it you will find the problem i don't think the harness needs to be replaced.

Might try the Ultimate Vrod forum http://www.myvrodsite.com or V-Nation http://www.v-nation.com they both have good techs that may be able to help.

good luck

Dennis

Hey Dennis:

Early on I disconnected the brake switch for the rear and the light stayed on. With test light both terminals were hot. Moved to the handle bars check switch behind front brake lever ohmed fine. Unhooked 6 pin connector under speedo brake light still on. Now with test light the orange white wire is my feed wire and red with yellow is brake light. Red with yellow wire is hot all the time. Pulled the wire loom from the rear brake switch up under the tank to the fuse area found no bad spots. After messing with the harness unhooking everything and then putting everything back together problem is now gone although several areas from the heavy harness heading back to the underside of the seat looks weathered. I think at this point even though it is working I am probably going to put a harness on. Harley shop says $507 so that is the way it is and about 6 hours to put it on. Thanks for all your help I'll keep you updated.

sounds like you were in the right area with the main harness.

for $507 i would look a little more but on the other hand if it gets worse it good end up leaving you stranded or worse result in an electrical fire that could result in getting hurt.

good luck and ride safe.
