Yet Another Noob Thread
I had originally become a member of this forum some time back, but I had lost my login info, so I had to start over. I like this username better, anyway! And yes, I am a musician who loves to listen to and play progressive rock! Don't kill the messenger! LOL

I have long wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle, but "real-life" issues always seemed to get in the way, and it wasn't a priority. This year, I had decided that for a fortieth (shh!) birthday present to myself, I would get a bike and learn to ride. My fortieth birthday isn't until mid-February of 2009 (just in time for the 2009 riding season), so I have a few months yet to try and save some money. I say "try", because some personal issues have come up that may hinder my plans.

Now that demand in the motorcycle/scooter/moped industry has exploded this year due to the high gas prices, there is now yet another incentive to get in the saddle!
I naturally plan on taking the MSF course just before or after getting a bike, so I will minimize making stupid "beginner mistakes" and to increase my confidence in riding.
I had settled upon finding and purchasing a smaller-displacement "beater" bike to practice riding on, and not having to worry about dropping the bike if/when I did (I have been told by many that it WILL happen sooner or later). I thought that a used-but-reliable smaller-displacement bike might do the trick: small and cheap enough to handle while learning to ride, but large enough for me to be comfortable on (I am 6'4" and 250 lbs., with very long legs). Eventually, once I have a bit of riding experience, and once I have the money saved up, I want to get my hands on larger-displacement bike!
Anyway, I will likely pick your collective brains over the next year, and perhaps add my own two cents when I feel the need. I look forward to some great conversations!

Cheers

Good luck on your bike search. That's always fun.
