Best place to ask about an 86 Soft tail, is in the softail section... they're pretty sharp over there.
Given it's been 10 years, I'd suggest taking the local MSF-beginner's class. plece place to dust off the cobwebs.... riding, and traffic have changed a lot, as you know from trucking.
